The tunnel expansion on the Gotthard mountain range enters the next round
After more than 20 years, we are now writing the second tunnel expansion story on the Gotthard mountains. At that time, we had already supplied our TH section (“flexible support”) for the giant NEAT railroad project (new rail link through the Alps) of the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) as part of the “Alpstahl” supply consortium.
After intensive meetings with the construction companies last year, we are delighted to also be involved in the expansion of the second tube of the Gotthard road tunnel. Once again, together with Jörimann Stahl AG, we will be supplying our tried-and-tested TH support system for both the northern and southern tunnel excavations.
The negotiations with Oliver Klaus, Sales Manager of Peiner Träger GmbH, our long-standing and reliable contact for TH section supplies, have been conducted and the contracts for the required qualities signed. PTG is also supplying us with the bottom flaps of the connecting clamps for the TH44 weight class (44kg/m) used in the Gotthard tunnel. We are very proud of this strong, long-standing and trustful cooperation, which already guaranteed reliable performance in the past.
Construction work on the Gotthard railroad tunnel began in the early 2000s and, with a length of 57 km, it is currently the longest railroad tunnel in the world. The Brenner Base Tunnel under construction right now, which is also a rail project, will be approximately the same length once it is completed. The Gotthard rail tunnel crosses the central Swiss Alps in a north-south direction, significantly improves the transportation of goods and passengers and makes an ecological contribution to relieving the previously congested and polluted Alpine valleys.
All of the approximately 35,000 tons of sectional steel of all TH types and material grades used in the NEAT project were supplied by Bochumer Eisenhütte. The TH support system made it possible to technically realize the tunnel project and thus to cope with the sometimes immense rock pressures.
The same is now being implemented in the road tunnel!
